Schuhmacher Ranch, Inc.

Horses

Horses have always been a large part of most every ranch, including ours. Starting back at the beginning there has always been horses on this ranch. Complete with the raising and showing of some of the best Morgan horses in the Nation in the 1960's.

As the family got out of the Morgan horse business we turned to Quarter Horses which are still what we have today. It has only been in recent years that we have started raising a few of our own Quarter Horses. Some of the bloodlines for are mares include: Frenchman's Guy, King, Doc's Decathalon, Doc's Prescription, Playgun, Shining Spark. Sunfrost, Gae Bar Lena.

Kids

All of the horses today are always handled with Good and Natural Horsemanship. Techniques for working with the horses do not come from just one Good/Natural Horsemanship Guru but from a combination of them all. Techniques also come from all disciplines of Horsemanship.

The horses are first halter broke and worked with as weanlings. They are then turned out to pasture until they are almost two years old. At that time they are brought back into the corrals and get hours of ground work done on them before they are considered to be ready to start. After they are started they will be used for general ranch work such as moving cattle. The horses then progress up to doing the harder work of sorting cattle or branding. When the horses are old enough they then get hours of tracking cattle before entering the arena to start learning to be roped off of. Our horses talents are not limited to the roping arena with several of them being showed in the Plains Quarter Horse Association show circuit, in not only halter classes but in reining, horsemanship, western pleasure, poles and barrels. Our goal is to have horses that can go do anything.
